Colorado Paid Family & Medical Leave: Do You Qualify?

Colorado's FAMLI program pays part of your wages for family or medical leave, and unlike most states, it comes with its own job protection once you've been on the job long enough.

One 12-week bucket, not separate stacks

FAMLI gives you up to 12 weeks in a benefit year, and that's a single pool covering every qualifying reason: recovery, bonding, and caring for family. The categories don't add on top of each other, so 12 weeks of bonding leaves nothing in the tank for a separate medical reason that same year.

Two things sit outside that cap. A serious health condition tied to pregnancy or childbirth adds up to four more weeks, for 16 total. And starting with claims in 2026, a parent whose newborn needs neonatal intensive care can get up to 12 additional weeks that don't reduce the rest, which can push a hard year well past 20 weeks.

What you need to qualify

The benefit is earnings-based and funded by payroll premiums, so there's no company-size floor to collect it. Job protection is the part with a condition attached: you're entitled to your job back once you've worked for the employer for at least 180 days. Apply and manage claims through the state at famli.colorado.gov.

The only way to know where you land is to run your own numbers: your tenure, hours, employer size, and reason for leave all move the answer. Leavely's free assessment walks through it in a couple of minutes and shows both whether you'll be paid and whether your job is protected.
