Rhode Island Paid Family & Medical Leave: Do You Qualify?
Rhode Island has paid out disability benefits since the 1940s, and it added caregiver leave on top. The two share a ceiling, so how you use one affects the other.

Disability and caregiver leave, under one cap
Temporary Disability Insurance covers your own illness, injury, or pregnancy recovery for up to 30 weeks. Temporary Caregiver Insurance covers bonding with a new child or caring for a seriously ill relative, and as of 2026 it runs up to eight weeks.
You can use them back to back for different reasons (recovery, then bonding), but the combined TDI plus TCI total can't top 30 weeks in a benefit year, and any TCI you use reduces the TDI still available to you.
Getting paid vs. keeping your job
TDI and TCI send the benefit; on their own they don't hold your job. Job protection comes through the Rhode Island Parental and Family Medical Leave Act, which provides up to 13 weeks in any 24-month period at covered employers. File a claim at dlt.ri.gov.
The only way to know where you land is to run your own numbers: your tenure, hours, employer size, and reason for leave all move the answer. Leavely's free assessment walks through it in a couple of minutes and shows both whether you'll be paid and whether your job is protected.
