Maine Paid Family & Medical Leave: Do You Qualify?
Maine's Paid Family and Medical Leave program began paying benefits on May 1, 2026, and it reaches just about every private employer in the state, down to those with a single worker.

How much leave, and the single cap
Maine covers a broad set of reasons under one program: bonding, your own serious condition, caring for family, military exigency, and safety leave after abuse or violence, all for up to 12 weeks. Family and medical leave share that 12-week ceiling; they don't add together into a larger number.
One point that confused even the early guidance: a pregnancy or childbirth medical leave can flow directly into bonding leave without a fresh waiting period, but the state's final rules confirm the combined total still stays within 12 weeks. It doesn't stretch to 24.
Who qualifies
The paid benefit applies at all private employers, regardless of size. Job protection (the right to return to your job) attaches once you've been employed for at least 120 days. The state runs applications through maine.gov/paidleave.
The only way to know where you land is to run your own numbers: your tenure, hours, employer size, and reason for leave all move the answer. Leavely's free assessment walks through it in a couple of minutes and shows both whether you'll be paid and whether your job is protected.
